How to make college your home away from home

One of the best parts of the college experience is creating a home and community for yourself that will give you connections that last a lifetime. Hear from CSP students and alumni on how they made their time at CSP memorable and how their experiences have impacted them today!

Your living space matters

For many, college is the first time moving away from home and family. Being in a new space takes time to get used to, but you can look at it as an opportunity to make the space your own. Aside from the necessities, which you can find in this helpful post, be sure to bring items that are comforting and make your dorm feel special to you.

Living with friends can help make the transition to a dorm easier. Having familiarity with the people you are sharing a living space with makes for a more comfortable environment. If you’re living with a new roommate, don’t worry; there are plenty of ways to get to know one another, which helps foster a healthy roommate relationship.

“I lived on campus during my last year at CSP. Probably the best decision of my life as I got to live with roommates, hang out with friends, and attend on-campus events.” – Jeffrey Yang ‘19

Bring your favorite blanket, frame photos of friends and family, or up your desk the same way you had it at home. There are so many ways to make your dorm room feel like home!

Get involved in the community

One of the best ways to meet new people and feel a sense of community is by being involved around campus. Join clubs, attend campus events, and take advantage of your school’s resources. Check to see if your school hosts volunteering opportunities, too! The more you interact with others, the more relationships you will make. Events aren’t just for students living on campus, either. Whether you live in the dorms or commute every day, the campus community is waiting for you!

“I was always so timid as a commuter, as I felt like I wouldn’t connect as well with other students since they lived in the dorms and mainly hung out there. But, CSP has hosted so many luncheons and activities to connect and hang out with fellow commuter students to where I feel like I have a home here.” – Dinah Melchor ‘23

Being involved in the community isn’t exclusive to on campus. Check out the local spots near campus for fun things to do with friends, job opportunities, and community activities. If your school is in a big city, like CSP, there are countless things to do and see locally.

“Whether it be through clubs, non-profit organizations, or volunteer work, the best experiences during my undergraduate career came through involvement on and off campus.” – Gabe Nkumu ‘22

Make connections that last

Your time on campus is temporary, so it’s important to remember that the connections and memories you make are what will last. Many people create lifelong friendships during college. Your professors can be mentors throughout your entire career, not just as a student. Get to know the people around you, make connections where you can, and plan on keeping in touch after graduation.

“Enjoy your time at CSP. College is about growing as an adult and building a strong foundation. This isn’t just educationally. It’s relationally, experientially, spiritually, physically, and also educationally. Make sure you use this time wisely as it goes faster than you think.” – Alex Eernisse ‘20

“Concordia gave me the opportunity to try new things, take various classes, and collaborate with students, professors, and the community in order to learn about various careers.” – Isabella D’Burke ‘22
