Keep your forward momentum as you work towards your degree, even in the summer months

The school year is finally over, so breathe a sigh of relief. And then get back to it! There are plenty of things you can do in the summer months to keep working towards your degree and your future career.

Take advantage of summer classes

If your program allows for it, consider taking a course or two during the summer semester to continue completing credits towards your degree. You’ll get ahead of the curve and be on track to graduate faster, saving you some time and allowing you to enter your field earlier. Talk to your academic advisor about your degree audit and figure out where you can work ahead with summer courses.

Broaden your horizons and study abroad

A great way to make the most of your summer, and have fun while doing it, is to find a study abroad program to complete. The great thing about a study abroad program through your university or college is that you earn credits towards your degree while having the opportunity to travel. There are many different study abroad programs of varying lengths. Whether you want to travel for a week, a month, or the entire summer, find a program that works for you!

Going abroad while earning college credits helps to bolster your resume while still enjoying your summer. It shows academic and professional perseverance while also highlighting interest in personal growth and exploration as well.

Planning ahead can help make studying abroad a viable option. Pick your study abroad trip early, save any necessary funds for your trip, and plan accordingly to make sure you get credit for the trip.

Find a summer job or internship

For many students, working throughout the summer is a necessity and a great way to maintain professional experience to include on your resume. Oftentimes, the work history present on your resume can help you land a job if it showcases relevant experience and reliability.

Likewise, an internship is necessary for certain degree completions and can be a great way to gain relevant career experience that’s applicable after graduation. Connect with the office of career development and academic advisors, contact local businesses, and search through online hiring platforms to find an internship that is right for you.

Volunteer your time with relevant organizations

If none of the options above work for you, a great way to still support your resume with a lower time commitment is by finding volunteer or job shadowing opportunities. Pick a couple of organizations to contact that can either offer you relevant insight into your future field or hands-on skills experience. Try to work in at least a few days of volunteer hours; the more, the better!

Volunteering tells future employers that you’re willing to put in the time to learn and strengthen your own skill set. Plus, you can make incredible connections in your field by volunteering your time!
