Workshop for Handbell Techniques and Pedagogy

Whether you have directed for a while, are a new director, or may someday be a handbell director, this workshop is for you. Topics covered include the teaching of handbell techniques from beginning to advanced, score study, rehearsal techniques, creative use of handbells in worship, bell assignments, how to effectively develop pulse and rhythmic skills, teaching tracking skills, music selection, critical listening, and handbell maintenance. After registering, you will be contacted to see what your specific needs are as a handbell director.  

Led by nationally recognized handbell experts Carolynne and Bill Mathis, this workshop will be helpful to handbell directors and ringers of any level of experience. Carolynne Mathis is the Director of the Handbell Ensemble and Beginning Handbell Ensemble at Concordia University, St. Paul and the Director of Music and Worship at Faith Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. Bill Mathis is the Director of the Twin-Cities based Bells of the Lakes Handbell Ensemble and Director of Music, Worship and Arts at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis.

Cost for the two-day Workshop is $75.00.  You may preregister by mailing your name, contact information (phone and email) and a check made out to “Concordia University” by September 24 to:

Preregistering will guarantee that you will have materials, but it is possible to drop in and register for the workshop onsite.

Workshop will be held in Room 118 of the Buetow Music Center on the Concordia University campus (300 Hamline Ave., St. Paul)
