Sampson graduated from Hamline University in 2000 with a B.A. in Anthropology and a minor in Elementary Education.  While at Hamline, he competed in cross country and track & field, specializing in the long sprints and relays.  Sampson attended Kasson-Mantorville High School in southeastern Minnesota.  He is a certified USA Track & Field Level I and II (jumps) coach and is very active in coaching education and clinics.

He lives in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul with his wife, Brianne.
