This comprehensive survey focuses on events and forces that have shaped European history since the French Revolution. From the unification of Germany in 1871 to the reunification in 1990, stressing the origins and consequences of the National Socialist period, 1933-45. Topics include Bismarck and his political legacy and the divergent paths taken by the two German states in the midst of the East-West conflict after 1945.
