Concordia, Schuler Invited to Continue Archaeological Project
Dr. Mark Schuler, professor of Theology and Greek and chair of the Department of Religion and Theology, learned recently that he has been invited to return for Phase 2 of the Hippos Excavations beginning in 2010.
"I am honored by this invitation and excited by the possibilities it offers for students and faculty at Concordia," Schuler said.
This summer the team completed its 10th season - what they thought would be their final season of excavation in Israel. Now they will continue working on the Northeast Church complex for at least one more year and will likely embark on a new project in future seasons excavating the Eastern Church in the domestic quarter of the city of Hippos/Sussita.
Professor Arthur Segal, head of the Archaeological Hippos Project, and Dr. Michael Eisenberg, co-director of Hippos, have expressed their appreciation and satisfaction for the excellent work done by Schuler and his team of volunteers under Schuler's "firm and devoted leadership." Added Segal and Eisenberg, "Concordia's dedicated and diligent workers have met the high academic and scientific standards of archaeological excavation while always displaying a cooperative and positive attitude."
